Most wasp calls in south-east Queensland are paper wasps nesting under eaves, in pergolas, in letterboxes and inside play equipment. The nest is usually small. The problem is where it is — right where people walk, hang washing or let kids climb.

What you are most likely dealing with
In Queensland the wasp you will meet at home is almost always a paper wasp: long-legged, brown to orange with yellow markings, building an open, umbrella-shaped nest of grey papery cells hanging from a single stalk. You can see the cells and the wasps sitting on them. Nests are commonly the size of a coin to the size of a saucer, and a single nest can be surprisingly defensive when it is bumped or sprayed badly.
You may also see mud daubers — solitary wasps that build tubes or lumps of mud on walls and under eaves. They are rarely aggressive and often need nothing more than removal of the old mud cells. We will tell you honestly if what you have is one of these and doesn’t warrant a paid treatment.
If anyone in the house has had a reaction to a sting, tell us when you call. We plan the job so nobody needs to be outside while we work, and we will not ask you to “just point out” the nest from close range.
How we remove a nest
- Locate every nest, not just the one you saw. Paper wasps often have several nests on one property — under the eaves on the sunny side, inside a hollow gate post, behind shutters.
- Treat at the right time. Wherever access allows, we treat when the wasps are on the nest, so the colony is dealt with rather than scattered and rebuilding a metre away.
- Apply a registered product, at label rate. Only APVMA-registered products for the use, named in writing before we start. Full product list on our safety and chemicals page.
- Remove the nest. Once the colony is dead the nest comes down and is bagged, so returning wasps have nothing to reoccupy.
- Treat the rebuild points. Wasps favour the same sheltered spots year after year. Where appropriate we apply a residual to those surfaces to discourage a new nest.
What it costs
Wasp work is priced on what we are removing and how hard it is to reach, and the price is confirmed with you before we start. A single low nest is a very different job from three nests under a two-storey eave. If you are already booking a general pest treatment, tell us about the wasps at the same time — it is usually cheaper to handle both on one visit.
Why not just spray it yourself?
You can, and plenty of people do. The trouble is that a hardware-store can sprayed from a ladder at midday tends to hit a few wasps, anger the rest, and leave you on a ladder next to an angry nest. A nest that survives often splits and rebuilds nearby. If the nest is above head height, inside a structure, or anyone in the house is allergic, it is worth having it done properly once.

When are wasps worst in south-east Queensland?
Paper wasp nests grow through the warmer months, so most calls come from late spring into autumn. Nests are smallest and easiest to deal with early in the season — if you see one starting, it pays to act then.
Will the wasps come back?
That colony won’t, because it is treated and the nest is removed. New queens can still pick the same sheltered spot in a later season, which is why we treat the likely rebuild points where the product label allows it.
Are bees included?
No. Honey bees are not treated as pests. If you have a honey bee swarm or hive, the right call is a local beekeeper or swarm collector, and we will point you towards one rather than destroy the hive.
Do I need to be home?
Not always. For external nests with clear access we can often do the work while you are out, provided pets are secured and we can reach the side of the house. We will confirm access with you when we book.
