Confirm it before you treat it

Bites alone don’t prove bed bugs — plenty of things cause itchy red marks. What proves it is the insect or its evidence: small dark spotting on mattress seams and bed frames, shed pale skins, tiny cream-coloured eggs in crevices, or the bugs themselves, flat and reddish-brown, around the size of an apple seed. Two species occur in Queensland, the common bed bug and the tropical bed bug, and both are handled the same way.

So the first visit is an inspection. We check mattresses, bases, bed frames, bedside furniture, skirting, power points near the bed, curtains and any lounge people sleep on. If we don’t find evidence, we will tell you so rather than sell you a treatment.

Why it takes two visits

Bed bug eggs are far harder to kill than the bugs that hatch from them. A single treatment knocks down the active population, then eggs hatch over the following days. The second visit, about two weeks later, targets that new generation before it can mature and lay. Skipping it is the most common reason bed bug jobs fail.

Visit one: inspection, then detailed crack-and-crevice treatment of beds, frames, furniture and the room edges where bugs harbour.
Visit two: re-inspection and follow-up treatment, around 14 days later.
Follow-up check: if any activity remains after the second visit, we tell you plainly and plan what happens next.

Your part: preparation

You will get a written preparation sheet when you book. The short version:

Wash bedding, clothing and soft items from affected rooms on the hottest setting the fabric allows, then tumble-dry on high. Heat is one of the most reliable tools against bed bugs.
Bag clean items and keep them out of the treated rooms until the programme is finished.
Clear clutter from under and around the bed so every edge and crevice can be reached.
Don’t move to sleep in another room — it tends to spread the problem to that room too.
Don’t use hardware-store foggers beforehand. They scatter bed bugs into walls and neighbouring rooms.

Units, rentals and short-stay properties

In attached housing, bed bugs can move between neighbouring units through wall cavities and shared services. Where a unit is affected we will recommend the adjoining units are inspected, and for managed properties we can work directly with the property manager or body corporate — see strata and body corporate.

What it costs

Bed bug programmes are priced after the inspection, on the number of rooms and how much furniture is involved, and the full two-visit price is confirmed in writing before we start. No surprise charge for the second visit — it is part of the job.

Do I need to throw out my mattress?

Usually not. Most mattresses can be treated and then fitted with a bed bug encasement. We will tell you if one is too far gone to save.

Can I sleep in the room after treatment?

Yes, once treated surfaces are dry — and you should. You sleeping in the bed draws surviving bugs out onto treated surfaces, which is part of how the programme works.

How long until they are gone?

Expect activity to drop sharply after the first visit and stop after the second. Heavy or long-running infestations can take longer, and we will be honest with you if yours is one of those.
