The fleas you can see are only a small part of the problem. Most of a flea population is eggs, larvae and pupae sitting in carpet, pet bedding, under furniture and in shaded parts of the yard. A treatment that ignores that will look like it worked — for about a fortnight.
Why fleas come back
Adult fleas live on the animal. Their eggs fall off into wherever the animal rests, hatch into larvae that hide in carpet fibres and cracks, then spin cocoons. The cocoon stage is the hard one: it shrugs off most treatments and can sit dormant until vibration, warmth and carbon dioxide tell it a host is nearby. That is why people often notice fleas when they come home to a house that has been empty — everything that was waiting hatches at once.
So a proper flea job is built around that life cycle, not around killing the adults you can see.
How we treat
- Pets first, same week. Every dog and cat in the house needs a current flea product from your vet at the same time. Treating the house without treating the animals doesn’t work.
- Internal treatment of carpets, rugs, under furniture and along skirting, with an APVMA-registered product selected to act on the immature stages as well as adults.
- External treatment of the shaded, sheltered areas where pets rest — under decks, along fence lines, kennels and under the house.
- Follow-up where the infestation is heavy, timed for when cocooned fleas are emerging.

Your part
- Vacuum thoroughly before we arrive, including under furniture, and empty the vacuum outside.
- Wash pet bedding on a hot cycle.
- Keep vacuuming every day or two for the following fortnight. It feels backwards, but vibration draws cocooned fleas out onto treated carpet — you will likely see a few during that period, and that is the treatment working.
- Don’t steam-clean or shampoo carpets for the period we advise afterwards.
What it costs
Flea treatments are priced on the size of the house and whether the yard is included, and the price is confirmed in writing before we start. If you are moving into a rental or a newly purchased home, it is often worth combining with a general pest treatment before your furniture goes in.
Frequently asked
We don’t have pets — how do we have fleas?
Usually from a previous occupant’s animal, or from possums, stray cats or wildlife under the house or in the roof. We look for where they are coming from as well as treating what is there.
How long before we can go back inside?
Once treated surfaces are dry, typically 30 to 60 minutes internally. Keep children and pets off treated carpet until then.
Why am I still seeing fleas after the treatment?
For a week or two that is expected, as cocooned fleas emerge and contact the treated surfaces. Keep vacuuming. If you are still seeing plenty after two weeks, call us.
Do you treat the pets?
